The team of Campbell and Campbell, Landscape Architects, and Robert Pinsky, U.S. Poet Laureate, has been selected as winner of the City of West Hollywood Veterans' Memorial Competition. Jointly sponsored and juried by the City's Veterans and Fine Arts Commissions, the $ 1 million Memorial, to be located at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Holloway Drive, will be the inaugural project of the West Hollywood's Public Art program.
Selected unanimously by the competition jury from a field of three finalist teams, the Campbell and Campbell/Pinsky submission was called "simple, strong, and contemplative" by City representatives. As proposed, the Memorial "a meditation on the warrior's journey of service and sacrifice" will include a monumental fountain, and a sunken courtyard enclosed by a wreath of laurel trees and low walls inscribed with an anthology of poetry. According to Architect Regula Campbell, the jury's selection acknowledges the potential of "the complementary arts of poetry and landscape architecture to create a powerful, memorable experience accessible on many levels.".
