The urban design and architectural guidelines established by Campbell & Campbell encourage design which is reflective of the Port's unique role, heritage and setting, with design references to the historic early 20th century industrial architecture of the surrounding wharves and of maritime and naval architecture. They intend to create a distinctive and coherent image expressive of the identity of the Port of Los Angeles as a world leading working seaport and key contributor to the vitality and economic strength of Los Angeles and the region, by encourage design of the highest quality, reflective of contemporary industrial architectural imagery, form and materials, and are explicitly responsive to sustainable design practices (solar orientation, energy efficiency, day-lighting etc.).
