EAST WASHINGTON BOULEVARD CORRIDOR REVITALIZATION
Culver City, California 1996 - 1998
![]()
Our design builds on Washington Boulevard's strength as a prototypical palm lined southern California Boulevard heading for the Coast. As the easterly gateway to Culver City - "the Heart of Screenland" - the Plan also recognizes the City's identity as the emerging scene for a new and growing media, design and arts community. The Plan reclaims excess roadway width to create walking, dining and shopping blocks, introducing flowering canopy trees in the sidewalks and a new median. Other unifying design elements along the Boulevard include the skyline palms encircled by distinctive brightly colored towers holding lights and graphics. New crosswalk paving and site furnishings such as bus shelters and signs have also been introduced. The design has given an identifiable and coherent overall image to the Boulevard and its districts, revealing and strengthening existing features, and introducing sequences of new experiences.
